Correction of Chest Deformities – Discussion on General Use of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Congenital thoracic abnormality and asymmetry are in fact common issues faced by many female friends. Common symptoms such as pectus carinatum (known as pigeon chest), pectus excavatum (known as funnel chest), or asymmetrical chest all fall in the category of chest deformities. This category pertains to developmental abnormality of the chest bone (sternum). If it occurs in a person with larger breasts, the abnormality can be more or less concealed so that it may be less obvious. However, many patients would have under-developed breasts because of the under-developed chest cavity structure. Hence, if sternum corrective surgery is not received during childhood, the chest wall will be firm after puberty. If the appearance of this type of chest is to be improved after adulthood, the most convenient way is to get help from the modern in breast augmentation surgery.

Some people may ask, is it real that breast augmentation surgery can correct abnormal structure such as Pigeon chest? How can this be possible? The principle is quite simple really. If we just separate the anterior chest skin and soft tissues by breast implants, the bone abnormality underneath will be covered by the breast implants and become subtle and not so easily to be discovered. For many people, their anterior chest abnormality will not be apparent after surgery. However, this type of corrective breast augmentation surgery is better exquisite. Many segments in the surgery require to be attained and massage and care after surgery need to be done in a more careful and cautious manner, so as to achieve the same surgical effect obtained from other general patients. Because the author find many clients of this type coming to clinic for diagnostics, corrective key points necessary for different chest types are thus described generally as followed:

Pigeon Chest:

This is the most common chest structure abnormality. It is characterized by a protrusion of the sternum and ribs instead of even positions, and the chest wall at both sides slopes outwards along the central protrusion and cause the expansion of tips and breasts outwards. The skin of the patients of this type is often very tight. High degrees of attention are necessary to treat the cleavage to enable breasts at both sides to be collected. The author would suggest inserting larger and better protruded implants to supplement the over-shallow cleavage issue brought by protrusion of central bones. In addition, breast massage from two sides inwards should be enhanced to make the cleavage reach the central position.

Funnel Chest:
Its characteristics are quite contrary to that of the Pigeon chest. The middle sternum is caved-in in a funnel- or basin-shape. If it is sever, sternum corrective surgery needs to be received during childhood to avoid negative effects on cardiopulmonary functions. One of the key points to correct such abnormality with breast augmentation surgery is to note that poking for rim of the chest on both sides needs to be sufficient and the implants at the cleavage must not be parted too closely, or it is easy for two breasts connected to each other to occur after surgery so that cleavage can not be presented beautifully. Furthermore, flatter implants need to be used for such operation so as to avoid the over-protrusion of the breasts and loss of a sense of beauty.

Asymmetrical Chest:
These are also common problems seen in clinics. Minor asymmetrical chest needs not to be corrected. However, if the sizes of two breasts differ over half one cup, or if the difference between levels of two ribs on each side is visible with naked eyes, moreover, if it is asymmetrical chest with one side of the chest flat and the other side sloppy, then it can be improved by breast augmentation surgery. The key of the surgery is the choice of the size of implants. The rule of thumb is symmetry of breasts after surgery. That is, two breasts of a patient must be inserted with different sizes of implants. The author would use sizers of different sizes during the surgery at all times to measure the difference between two breasts, and then insert the breast implants at last. Hence excellent effects can always be achieved.

Although correction for chest deformities can be achieved by breast augmentation surgery, the patient should not neglect the importance of breast massage after surgery. Although it takes longer than massaging after general breast augmentation surgery does, however, to obtain a breast shape same as normal people or even a more beautiful and softer shape, it is worth all these hard work, isn't it?
