Surgical Facial Sculpting of Apples Cheek

Every one of us adores the apples cheek of little girls which assembles the tasty red apple, especially when they smile. Cute apples cheek has rejuvenating power to make people feel young again. Apples of the cheek (plumping area of the cheeks when a person smiles) generally refer to the reverse-triangular area on the cheek just below the eye sockets. Since the facial contour tends to develop laterally as we grow (or sagging and drooping skin from ageing), tissues underneath the apples cheek will start to loss causing depressed cheeks. If regular and long-term maintenance are not emphasized, a person may appear tired and old. In addition, other issues such as depressed eye sockets or deepening of nasolabial folds may occur. Therefore, correction for this type of facial issues has become a profound topic for beauty seekers.

Nowadays, there are several methods to restore and prevent the loss of apples cheek. One of the most rapid methods is hyaluronic acid injection and other injective facial fillers. Despite its rapid results, these injections may only last for less than a year and repeat injections are required at a regular manner. Furthermore, the surface of both cheeks would require substantial amount of doses. The depressed areas will intensify as a person aged, hence, the doses would gradually increase. From a long-term perspective, it is lack of economic benefits. At the same time, traditional approach such as autologous fat injection usually is part of the plastic surgery procedures. Although this type of treatment is simple and cheap, the fat transfer may be easily absorbed, not to mention the possibility of other uncertain factors. In addition, the weight of fat added to the skin will result in side effects such as drooping skin after a few years. Therefore, most aesthetic surgeons have replaced this type of conventional treatment since the introduction of hyaluronic acid injections to the market. However, is there another option to permanently improve issues with apples cheek other than the two approaches mentioned above?

Therefore, the author would like to introduce the surgical approach aiming at permanently enhance the depressed cheek, which is known as the apples cheek sculpting surgery. This type of surgery is primarily adopted to improve inborn underdeveloped facial bones (sunken appearance in the middle of the face) or mandibular underdevelopment (half-moon-shaped face). Recently, aesthetic surgeons have employed this surgery in sculpting apples cheek due to its lifting results. Intraoral incisions which are approximately 2cm are performed at the both sides of upper gum. Therefore, the incisions are invisible and surgery is performed with intravenous anesthesia. The surgery is completed within 1 hour and there are two types of synthetic implants for selection:

1. Silicon malar implant:
Suitable for female candidates whom have smaller face shape or candidates with mild and moderate mid-face depression. Advantages of this implant include the various sizes for customization, smooth and natural results without expanding the face. Besides, the implants can be easily removed in the future. On the contrary, this type of implant cannot improve severely depressed apples cheek. In addition, some patients are concerned with the chances of allergic reaction or inflammation.

2. Synthetic bone graft (Medpor):
This type of material is well-tolerated by the human body. It is mainly adopted to correct severely depressed mid-face or underdeveloped facial bones and rarely used in regular facial re-contouring. Advantages for this type of implant include the ability to increase the thickness of apples cheek and face width at the same time. Besides, strength of the material is the same as real skeleton. However, the results may create a harsh appearance (but generally acceptable by males). Another shortcoming is the difficulty of removing the implant because the material is secured on the cheekbone with screws.

In addition, there are a few disadvantages to this type of surgery which require more consideration:

1.

A relatively longer post-operative adaptation period to the appearance is required.

2.

Every individual has different degree of toleration for synthetic implants. Hence, inflammation to the wounds and rejection to the materials may occur.

3.

In the future, surgical removal (when the implants are unwanted) is required because the implants will not be absorbed by the body as in the case of hyaluronic acid injection.

After the author’s introduction above, readers should be more familiar with the topic and have fundamental understanding toward the surgery. As a matter of fact, this type of surgery is similar to mentoplasty (chin implant) and rhinoplasty as they are not so complicated and have permanent results. Additionally, it is the optimal choice for patients who wish to fill their apples cheek. If you are fed up with regular hyaluronic acid injections, why not conscientiously consider the sculpting surgery for apples cheek?
