Areola and Nipple Reduction Surgery

1. Will this surgery reduce or impair sensation in the nipples?

This surgical procedure only involves removing and suturing skin around the areola and nipple. It does not influence the nerves in the nipple, so there is no cause for concern. There might be a bit of numbness in the nipple and surrounding area for up to a month after surgery. The numb sensation will fade away as you recover.

2. Will nipple reduction surgery affect breastfeeding ability?

Nipple reduction surgery is completely different from the procedure followed for inverted nipple correction. Skin is removed and sutured around the nipple only. It will in no way affect the mammary glands, which are responsible for milk production. It is a common misconception that these two procedures are one and the same.
3. My areolas and nipples are enlarged and dark in color. Is there any way to alleviate this?

Sometimes the color of areolas and nipples darken on their own accord, but the majority of pigmentation occurs after pregnancy. There is no quick cure for it. If your areolas are dark and enlarged, I would first suggest a areola reduction to reduce how prominent they look. If all you desire is less pigmentation, the Doctor will prescribe Retin-A topical cream. The pigmentation will be reduced, but cannot be completely reversed. Also, treatment must be continued for while with patience before results are achieved. Also, a light colored tattoo on the areolas can be a quick fix, but ink color must be chosen with careful. It is not recommended, as under close examination, the areolas still appears to be slightly unnatural.

In addition, laser lightening of the areola is quicker, but comes with a temporary wound and at a higher cost. Please think twice before using some areola lightening creams on the market, as the ingredients are often unspecified and the damage they cause may cost more to repair than the cost of the cream itself.
