1. Is it with high risk for bone shaving surgery? Is it deadly?

Honestly, the risks for bone shaving surgery are indeed higher than other cosmetic surgeries; the main reason is the longer surgery time is troublesome for anesthetics, and bleeding during surgery. So we will perform a careful physical examination on bone shaving patients before surgery, to discover potentially dangerous factors. Also, we will employ a professional anesthesiologist to monitor the entire operation, in order to guarantee the safety of the surgical process. As for bone shaving cases in the past that resulted in death, have mostly been exaggerated by the press, the real reasons causing death are usually not the surgery itself.

2. What are the complications of bone shaving surgery? Can they be treated?

The most common complication after bone shaving surgery is hematoma; sometimes this is caused by delayed slow bleeding, and cannot be discovered during surgery. So we will use drainage tubes according to the actual situation, and ask the patients to stay in the hospital to lie down and rest. Also cases where too much jaw bone was shaved causing fractures or instability have occurred in Korea, part of the reasons are because of variations in the patient bone structures. The above situations can all be avoided by the training and experience of the surgeons, so you do not need to worry.
3. I have a very thick and broad jaw; can it only be solved through bone shaving surgery?

Normally a fat and thick jaw bone is caused by three reasons; one is an overly thick fat layer, which can be solved by facial Liposuction; the second one is the overly thick masticatory muscle under the fat layer, which can be treated through a Botox injection. The last one is the problem with a widening jaw, which can only be solved through bone shaving surgery. Of course, you may have a combination of two problems; this can only be determined by a doctor’s evaluation.
4. Will the bones on the two sides of the face be even after bone shaving? What do we do if the bones are uneven?

Our bones on the two sides of our face have unevenness naturally; we can discover this through X-rays or measurements before surgery. During surgery we try to achieve evenness on the two sides, the unevenness that is not discovered is usually located at the cheeks, because this location is not wrapped in soft tissues like muscles. Although it can be observed easily, this diagnosis can only be made after the swelling goes down. If it is unevenness caused by improper securing of the bones on one side or improper healing, another small adjustment surgery needs to be performed.
5. Are there many methods to treat a box-like face? Which method should I choose?

The definition of a box-like face includes problems with the bones and soft tissue, which is saying if the appearance of your face looks fat or square; it is categorized into a group that needs adjustments. Normally bone shaving surgery is used to adjust box-like faces caused by protruding bones; Liposuction and Botox injections are used to get rid of thick soft tissue. Sometimes a box-like face is formed by more than one factor, and needs to be treated through a combination of methods in order to achieve satisfactory results.
6. Will the shaved bones grow back again?

Usually only the corners of the jaw bone may grow new bones, because this location is where the masticatory muscles are attached. Some customers with advanced muscle development have had bones grow back after bone shaving surgery. You can relax because tracking the patients in the long term, we discover that the conditions do not return to the state before surgery. Also, regular Botox injections are also a trick to prevent bones from growing back. As for protruding cheek bones, the bones will not grow back in the shaved locations.
7. Can bone shaving help improve my malocclusions situation?

Bone shaving surgery only removes the protruding bones in the corners of the jaw and stem of the jaw, it is basically a cosmetic surgery, and is not related to functional malocclusions. Basically bone shaving surgery needs to be performed separately from malocclusions adjustments, but there’s no relation between cause and effect, so you can make decisions based on your needs and budget.
8. My friend went to get jaw bone shaving surgery, but there seems to be no obvious differences?

Many patients undergo bone shaving surgery also think the same way. Because the cortex of the bone is especially hard, it takes a lot of effort to saw off; you can imagine how difficult it would be to use pure shaving. Although bone shaving surgery has attributes like little scaring, a short recovery time, and lower costs, but carefully choosing the patients to perform surgery on is the only way to have satisfactory results. But the effects really cannot be compared with visual bone shaving surgery.
9. Can bone shaving be combined with other surgeries?

Yes it can, actually many patients receive bone shaving along with other facial reconstructive surgeries, for example rhinoplasty, double eyelid surgery, or even breast implants, etc. As long as your body conditions are normal, and the combined surgery time is not too long, the surgeries can all be performed together. Because of the increased surgery time, we will pay special attention to water supplements and physical monitoring to ensure the safety of the surgery.
10. Some people say that after bone shaving the mouth cannot be opened, is this normal?

For jaw bone shaving surgery, because of the swelling of the soft tissue near the temporomandibular joint after surgery, temporary inability to open the mouth may occur. This is another reason we recommend a liquid diet. The extent of this condition will vary between people, but most patients will get improvment within two weeks. If it is caused by the surgeon shaving the area too high, resulting in temporomandibular joint damage or adhesions, it may not recover easily.
