Mandible reduction surgery

1. Can the mouth open or will it be stiff after mandible reduction surgery?

The mouth cannot open because of swelling after mandible reduction surgery, so mouth opening exercises must be done the three days after surgery. The week after surgery, it is better to limit intake to mostly liquids. This dietary situation usually improves after the swelling goes down, and normal food intake can usually begin after two weeks. Besides the limitations of food intake, your speaking will not be affected during this period.

2. Is this type of surgery dangerous? Will it harm the nerves or the blood vessels?

The traditional bone shaving entry wound is at the skin of the face; this method may hurt the facial nerves or vessels under the skin. Our clinic uses the Korean bone shaving surgery that enters from the mouth, and directly undergoes deep periosteum separation. This step isolates the nerves and the blood vessels, so they cannot be damaged, and will eliminate the possibility of too much bleeding.
3. Will mandible reduction surgery cause a lot of bleeding? Why are the drainage pipes used?

All facial bones are flat bones, they do not have a lot of marrow, so the amount of bleeding during surgery is minimal, and only around 50-100cc. The amount of bone shaved off is a lot more because the range shaved for the jaw is much larger than the upper zygoma. After surgery it may still bleed slowly, so we usually put on drainage pipes as a precaution. From the drainage amount, we will estimate the recovery situation to unsure the hematoma will not accumulate in the body and cause pressure in the neck or poor healing, so this is an important procedure to ensure a safe operation.
