Breast Implant Replacement
There is no promise of the life span
of a breast implant. After years of
wear and tear, when it is time to replace
a new implant before the old one leaks
is a very important issue after breast
augmentation surgery. Besides, if patients
are dissatisfied at the quality or texture
of the previous implants (ex: the edge
or folds of saline implants, the micro-leak
of silicon implants, etc.), or even
want to replace a new implant to prevent
the accidental leakage, they can choose
another implant of different materials
to improve the result.
The space created by the first operation
has shaped, so most new implants have
to be the same size as the former one,
which can also prevent the change of
the breast shape. Because it is unnecessary
to separate tissues for more space in
the replacement of the new implant,
patients would not feel pain and do
not need to do breast massage again
after the operation, yet the conditions
have to be met for the replacement of
the implants, mainly a soft breast.
If the breasts show capsular contracture
or deformation, then the secondary operation
has to deal with the capsule, instead
of simply changing to another implant
of different material.
Indications for implant replacement:
1. Patients are dissatisfied at the
original implant.
2. A sudden burst or leak of the implant.
3. The implant has exceed its normal
span (ex: 15-20 years)
4. Patients want to have a smaller implant.
Implant
replacement operation is similar
to the first breast augmentation
surgery. In WiSH clinic we would
make the same incision which was
created last time, find the capsule
and reopen it. Then we would retrieve
the old implant and use an endoscope
to check if there is any foreign
body left in the capsule. After
confirming everything is fine,
we would flush and clean the site
with normal saline, and finally
insert the new implant into the
original space to finish the operation.
The operation would last about
1 hour. Patients only need general
post-surgical wound care and don’t
have to re-massage their breasts.
