The combination of zygoma and mandible reductions

Singly choosing a zygoma or mandible reduction surgery may resolve majority of the face shape problems, but to patient with a typical wide face or even square face it is insufficient. As the bones at these two spots are too protruded, which will easily cause the hollowness occurred on the temples above and the cheeks in the middle, letting the profile of the face to appear similar to the bottle gourd shape. If cheek augmentation is wrongly applied to rectify this kind of hollowness then the shape of face will appear to be more swollen and enlarged. This is not an ideal method of treatment. Therefore, if wanting to fundamentally solve this structure problem, then choosing to rectify the zygoma and mandible at same time is compulsory in seeing the effects quickly.

Moreover the face shapes of many people are not wide, but hope to have a small face or even an oval face by going through the method of surgery. Also through this kind of combination of upper and lower bone reduction surgery can reduce the shape of the face at the same time. The ideal face profile can be achieved through this method.

The surgery method of combining upper and lower bone reduction is the integration of the zygoma and mandible reductions. They are the same from the technical aspect point of view; however before surgery the relative position and the new shape of face after receding zygomas and the mandible at the same time must be considered. Before the surgery, this must be precisely calculated and evaluated through X ray in order to complete this surgery step by step.

Usually the width of the zygoma decides the position of mandible, therefore the zygoma located on upper face would be the area firstly to carry out the bone reduction process. The mandible reduction will be carried out next after the zygoma reduction is completed. This entire process approximately takes 4~5 hours, also as the surgery length is longer, after the surgery, patient must remain at the hospital for one night for further observation of each recovery conditions. The drainage tube inside the mouth will be removed the next day before leaving the hospital. After the surgery, patients can only eat fluid food within the first 2 weeks; verbal expression will not be affected. Moreover, after the surgery, in 1~2 months, patient must wear a head cover if possible to help to reduce the swollenness and prevent loosing or sagging of the skin on the cheeks.
