Professionals and the general public are often confused by underdevelopment of “mandible” and “chin”. There is a simple way to determine the difference. If you have the occlusion problem of biting deeply (When teeth occluded, the lower row of the teeth is located distantly away from the upper row of the teeth. Seeing it from the front side, the front tooth at lower row can hardly be seen.), then you probably have combination of underdeveloped mandible or overdeveloped maxilla instead of a simple problem in deficiency of the chin. For example, refer to the picture below.

If you have a problem of biting deeply and sometimes it cause extroversion of the lower lip, you could not only receive chin augmentation that can not improve your exterior appearance entirely. At this time, the best method is to consider an osterotomy surgery which the underdeveloped mandible extended in addition with the chin elongation surgery, will add a perfect finishing touch effect on your face.

Over half of the people with underdeveloped mandible generally also have overdeveloped maxilla which will also have the problems of smile gum and osteogenic buck teeth. Therefore, we generally will combine maxillary osteotomy and mandibular osteotomy to improve this type of facial constitution. About 1/8 of people only require maxillary osteotomy to improve their osteogenic buck teeth, in addition chin elongation surgery to naturally resolve the problem of underdeveloped mandible.
